DOS Email to Counties: "Smishing" Text Messages Sent to Voters

DOS Email to Counties: "Smishing" Text Messages Sent to Voters

We wanted to alert you to a potential smishing campaign reported by one of our counties. Based on available information, it appears that longtime registered voters are receiving text messages from “Allvote.com” indicating that there is a problem with their voter registration and urging them to take action to update their status. The county was able to secure a copy of the text message (copied below).

It is important to remind voters that opportunistic bad actors may attempt to use this campaign season to send phishing or smishing emails/texts like the one described above. Therefore, voters should not click on links unless they are certain that the message is from a credible source, and they should never provide personal identifying information in response to such a message. You can direct voters to the Attorney General’s website to learn more about how they can protect themselves from these scams and how they can report them. You can also find some helpful information about avoiding social engineering and phishing attacks on CISA’s website.
