Commissioners recognize area man for service to seniors

During their recent meeting, Greene County Commissioners presented a Certificate of Recognition to Rev. Dr. James C. Cherry, Sr., of Jefferson, who was selected as a recipient of a prestigious award for his work with, and dedication to, area seniors.
WAYNESBURG – During their recent meeting, Greene County Commissioners presented a Certificate of Recognition to a local doctor who was selected as a recipient of a prestigious award for his work with, and dedication to, area senior citizens.

The Certificate was presented to Rev. Dr. James C. Cherry, Sr., of Jefferson during the Commissioners’ regular meeting on Sept. 4 to recognize Cherry being honored by Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging, which presented him with the agency’s 2019 Humanitarian Award earlier this year.

The Certificate states that a humanitarian is defined as someone who works to make the lives of other people better, and Rev. Dr. Cherry “definitely meets this definition.”

“His willingness to share his time, talents and education with his community and the southwestern Pennsylvania region showcase the compassion, empathy and selflessness that shine through in all of his volunteer work,” the Certificate states.

Dr. Cherry’s accolades and achievements in teaching and helping the elderly community are voluminous. He serves as Vice-President of the Greene County Senior Citizens Council and the SWPA-AAA Greene County Senior Action Council, as well as on the SWPA-AAA advisory council, where he is on the Long-Term Care Committee and the Special Activities Committee.

He also holds memberships on numerous boards and committees, which allow him to stay current with changes in programs for the elderly, including the Human Services Advisory Board and the Drug and Alcohol and Mental Health/Intellectual and Developmental Disability Services Program Committees.

He has received a Certificate of Training in ministering to the elderly, and he has visited the elderly and sick in hospitals and nursing homes throughout the region for more than 25 years.

Commissioners Blair Zimmerman, Dave Coder and Archie Trader said the Board of Commissioners congratulate Rev. Dr. James C. Cherry, Sr., for receiving the 2019 SWPA-AAA Humanitarian Award, “a well-deserved honor presented to a man who has devoted his life in service to teaching and helping others.”
