Commissioners proclaim Employ the Older Workers Week

Greene County Commissioners recently issued a proclamation recognizing that the week of Sept. 23-27 be proclaimed as Employ the Older Workers Week.
WAYNESBURG – The Greene County Commissioners recently issued a proclamation to the local office of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging recognizing that the week of Sept. 23-27 be proclaimed as “Employ the Older Workers Week.”

The proclamation was presented during the Commissioners’ regular meeting on Sept. 4 to representatives from the local SWPA Area Agency on Aging, Southwest Training Services, Inc., and Blue Prints (formerly known as Community Action Southwest), as well as representatives of the Greene County Senior Citizens Advisory Council.

Commissioner Blair Zimmerman said the proclamation is important because it recognizes not only the fact that more seniors are seeking employment but also that services are readily available in the area to help them.

“Older workers continue to work, stay active, help supplement their savings and remain financially independent, as well as continue to contribute to the local and state economy,” Zimmerman said. “With this proclamation, we recognize that our Area Agency on Aging, through its Senior Community Service Employment Program, is committed to promoting the benefits of employing older workers, as well as providing on-the-job training opportunities for income-eligible individuals.

Commissioner Dave Coder added that due to the number of older adults in the workplace rising, along with the average and median age of the U.S. population, the Commissioners recognize “the important role older workers play in our current and future workforce, and offer our appreciation to those agencies who help our seniors.”

Accepting the proclamation were: Eric Braun, Blueprints; Matthew Uram, SWPA-AAA Senior Community Service Employment Program Coordinator; Lisa Neil, Southwest Training Services, Inc.; Pat Lemley, President of the Greene County Senior Citizens Advisory Council; Stacy Stroman, Blueprints Director; and Nancy Riggle, SWPA-AAA Supervisor for Greene County.
