GREENE COUNTY VETERANS AFFAIRS ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Special days coming up:
    • March 3Navy Reserve Birthday & Navy Day. The Navy Birthday is one of the two Navy-wide dates celebrated annually – Navy Birthday and Navy Day.

    • March 5Seabee Birthday. The word "Seabee" is actually a heterograph of the first initials of the words "Construction Battalion" i.e. CB = Seabee. The Seabees legacy comes from the construction of hundreds of miles of airstrips and roadways, the dredging of harbors and building of piers, while building anything and everything it took to accomplish the mission in whatever theater they were assigned going back to 1942. As combat engineers, they build and demolish to support the rest of the forces.

    • March 13K9 Veterans Day. is celebrated on March 13th on the official birthday of the US Army K9 Corps, which was formed in 1942. Joseph White, a retired military working dog trainer, originated the idea for the day.

    • March 15American Legion Birthday. The day in 1919 when the first American Legion caucus, held by members of the American Expeditionary Force, convened in Paris. Much as the birthday of the United States is celebrated on July 4 – for the day in 1776 when revolting patriots declared the independence of the British colonies and the spirit of America was born – March 15 is the date on which the Legion came to life.

    • March 29Vietnam Veterans Day. On January 12, 1962, United States Army pilots lifted more than 1,000 South Vietnamese service members over jungle and underbrush to capture a National Liberation Front stronghold near Saigon. Operation Chopper marked America's first combat mission against the Viet Cong, and the beginning of one of our longest and most challenging wars. Through more than a decade of conflict that tested the fabric of our Nation, the service of our men and women in uniform stood true. Fifty years after that fateful mission, we honor the more than 3 million Americans who served, we pay tribute to those we have laid to rest, and we reaffirm our dedication to showing a generation of veterans the respect and support of a grateful Nation.

"Buy Local, Buy Greene" Network:
The "'Buy Local, Buy Greene" campaign was launched in 2011 to promote Greene County businesses and educate consumers on the power of buying local. Several local organizations have partnered to provide funding for this initiative which includes a social media campaign, promotional materials, and give-a-ways items. There is no cost involved to join the network. Seventeen businesses signed on to the network in 2013 and nearly 50 consumers pledged to spend a total of $4,829/month at local businesses through out online survey.

The Buy Local, Buy Greene campaign is successful due to the partnership of Community Bank, Greene County Conservation District, Greene County Tourism, University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center, Wayensburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful, and Waynesburg University Center for Research and Economic Development. The conservation district provides technical assistance in reaching agricultural communities in Greene County.

Get the facts and make your pledge to join the LOCAL GREENE COUNTY effort at: www.waynesburgpa.org/buylocal.html. FMI, or to schedule a speaker for your group contact: Buy Local, Buy Greene chairperson, Lindsey Biddle at 724-627-9054. Remember you have a choice of where you eat, shop, and do business. The Buy Local, Buy Greene Committee urges you to "Choose Greene!"
